Derek values dogs as essential tools for promoting both stockmanship and stewardship. His breed of choice is the versatile Border Collie. These dogs are integral to his targeted grazing operation – Top Goat, and they also excel in the trialing world.
Derek competes in MSSA, NCA, and USBCHA trials and holds three national champion titles.
He grew up working on his grandfather’s cow-and-calf operation, where he and his siblings learned how to move cattle efficiently and minimize stress—often without the benefit of well-trained working dogs. Today, Derek finds fulfillment in helping people become skilled, successful stockmen with their Border Collies.

Join us for one on one training time with Derek. His clinic will accommodate just started pups to advance level working dogs.
There will be a professional audio setup for participating handlers and auditors to hear discussions during each session.
During lunch we’ll have ample time for group discussions and Q&A.
