Breed Associations

Founded in 1983, the ABCA is the primary breed registry for working border collies in the United States.  As described on their website, “The ABCA exists to register, maintain and verify the pedigrees of Border Collies, to promote and foster in North America the breeding, training and distribution of reliable working Border Collies, and to promote stockdog trials and exhibitions.”

Breed Associations

This is the main registry for Australian Shepherds in the U.S.  Their homepage states, “ASCA was established as the parent club for the breed in 1957. We are the largest independent breed-specific club in the United States.” The organization is known for sanctioning various types of arena and practical farm trials throughout the United States which are typically open to the participation of other herding breeds.

Breed Associations

As described on their website, “Sole registry for purebred border collies in Canada, incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act. Our objectives are the encouragement, development and regulation of the breeding of purebred border collies in Canada.” The CBCA does not regularly sanction trials, but they do sponsor the CBCA Championships, an annual championship sheepdog trial for CBCA-registered dogs.

Breed Associations

The purpose of the Hangin’ Tree Cowdog Association is to promote, protect, and advance the quality of registered Hangin’ Tree Cowdogs. The association maintains a pedigree registry for qualified dogs and supports their use in humane livestock handling. It educates handlers on training while advocating for the breed’s role in effective stock management.

Breed Associations

The ISDS website states, “The International Sheep Dog Society is a member organisation and registers over 6,000 Border Collie pups every year on behalf of its members. The ISDS Number and Dog Certificate are a guarantee of pedigree that, for most dogs, can be traced back over 100 years.” It organizes 5 national trials in the U.K. and Ireland and the World Sheepdog Trial (every 3rd year).

Breed Associations

The Registry was created to preserve and maintain pedigrees and records of the Working Australian Kelpie in North America. The Registry urges breeders and owners of the Working Australian Kelpie to maintain breed integrity by preserving the natural working (herding) ability, purpose, conformation, temperament and overall good health of the Working Australian Kelpie.”
