Rodear is a point and time event that places a great deal of emphasis on the stockmanship of the handler and the quiet and controlled manner in which the dog maneuvers the cattle through obstacles that are intentionally designed to require both the dog and horse/rider to negotiate. 

Sanctioning is available for events in the U.S. that agree to adhere to the guidelines from which Rodear America originated. Divisions offered for sanctioning include Open, Intermediate, Novice, Ranch, Nursery and Youth.

A Rodear nursery dog is defined as a dog no more than 2.5 years (30 mos) on April 1 of the current competition calendar year.
